![]() 2006 is the Year of the Dog in Chinese Astrology. The Dog year starts on January 29th. "Ms. Dog has two sides to her personality. She'll be open and friendly like a puppy dog and look at you so adoringly that it will melt your heart. She'll follow you around and be content just to be at your side. Her loyalty will never be suspect. However....
"At other times, the Dog will get ferociously territorial and bark loudly to scare you away. No Trespassing! she's saying. It's she who's scared, of course. Scared of sexual intimacy. Scared of connecting with another human being. So, she'll find a reason to be huffy and scare you off and then return to the sanctuary of her doghouse. No one enters her doghouse (I.e. "her space") without permissiion. but you can easily get into her "dog house" if you don't live by society's standards. Ms. Dog can get morally uptight and be highly judgemental about other lifestyles that are not circumspect and conservative.
"Ms Dog can be so scared of intimacy that she'll withdraw behind a facade of moralistic righteousness, finding anything erotic and sexual "dirty". She will often stay celibate for long periods of time until the right person comes along.
"The Dog tends to marry infrequently and will go for extended periods of time beween relationships. It does seem strange to the Dog at times, because she is so loyal and loveable, that her love does not seem to be reciprocated. It's harder for her to find a new relationship than the other animals. She doesn't realize, however, that at times her energy field pushes people away rather than attracts them.
"On the other side, the male Dog tends to be 'hibited' or even "Uninhibited" about sex. He sees it as a normal, healthy extension of life, and wonders how the other side gets so uptight about it. He, though, has separated sex and relationship in his mind, so that one is exclusive of the other. He likes uncommitted dalliances, and doesn't want to get too close, too intimate....intimacy scares him, too. He's involved in the moment, and when he starts to have true feelings for the other person, he's off to heal his wounds, and wonder what happened this time? It's only his fear that keeps him from being involved. (In this instance, I'm describing the inhibited as "she" and the uninhibited as 'he', and that's usually how it's played out, but sometimes the energies can be reversed).
"The myth of Psyche and Eros is very appropriate metaphor for the Dog. Psyche is a beautiful maiden who has much more to offer than her sisters, but they marry well and she is left behind. Many suitors admire her, but go off and marry someone else. The god Eros (Cupid) is smitten with Psyche and refuses to obey his mother, Aphrodite, who wants to dispose of her. In the end, Psyche and Eros unite, and she becomes the heavenly bride of Eros she is made immortal. So, too, does the mind (Psyche) have to merge wih the emotions (Eros) and become one to be truly open and intimate....which is the Dog's quest. When the Dog achieves this alchemical union, she is truly a complete person. At some point the Dog has to truly step into the fire and realize that alchemy.
"The pericardium is the membrane sac that protects the heart. It takes the frequent blows that would normally wear down the heart and protects us in an emotional clinch. It not only has to do with intimate encounters, but with how comfortable we are in groups and other social interactions. People who have this meridian prominent frequently have cold extremities; they complain about having cold hands and feet. They are the ones that are always bundled up when everyone else thinks it's simply cold. Their body tends to be cold and restrictive. They tend to shy away from intimacy, and frequently find themselves filled with regret and remorse as they get older for not taking a chance on love when it was offered. Men can have the proclivity for prostate problems because of this.
"The affirmation for the Dog is, "I am intimate". The Dog needs to become that open, trusting, loyal Dog, in order for the barriers to come down and allow people in, and to become fully, totally intimate, with a mate as well as ineracting with others. The Dog needs to learn to come forward when meetinig someone, not retreat." excerpted from my book, "Chinese Power Animals - Agents of Transformation", copyright 2000, all rights reserved.
No matter what year you were born, there is Dog energy somewhere in your chart: Ox - The Ox has Dogs in his life who are his employers....and his dad. Dad can be a guy always out on the prowl, looking for one night stands.....or he can be a dad who has little intereest in sex and drives his wife crazy. This can also be the Ox' employer, man or woman. These people tend to look for the clinkers in life instead of listening to the symphony. Tiger - The Tiger has a Dog in the area of coaches and ministers. Also, professors. These people can have high moral standards about sex just because they are inhibited about it and wish to prove themselves right by turning others against sex as well. Cat - Cats have Dog people in their lives who handle their money, or inheritances. They may be fastidious and blush over any bawdy language when reading the will to the family. Dragon - The Dragon has Dogs as mates.....also, their second child, mom's mom and dad's dad. These people can exhibit either extreme of the Dog energy, or be fully integrated and see sex as a normal, healthy pleasure. The Dragon is lustful and likes sex and can get taken aback when his/her mate isn't as carnal as s/he is. The Dragon is all for the conquest, so if the Dog mate doesn't meet his/her needs, the Dragon may leave for yet another conquest. Snake - The Snake finds they work with Dogs on the job, or in the healing professions. Snakes may feel uncomfortable around religious types who have all sorts of hangups around sex. The Snake can have a step mother, wicked or not, that feels this way. Horse - The Horse link up with Dogs for affairs. They also find that they have Dogs for children. The Horse is full of love, and is open to being with another, and sex is a part of that. The Horse can look askance at the children who are uptight and aren't in relationship. These people can bark and scare away potential mates for the Horse, because the Dog doesn't want him/her to get hurt again. Sheep - The Sheep has a Dog for a mother. Mom is usually inhibited and has all sorts of hangups over sex. It's the Sheep's foundation and is a strong influence. The Sheep can go with the Mother's intimacy issues, or can turn and go the opposite way, having sex for sex's sake and not really make a commitment. Monkey - The Monkey finds Dogs in the area of teachers and neighbors. They can have teachers who are single and never married. They can also have siblings who are uptight, particuarly the one after him/her. Rooster - The Rooster has relatives that are Dogs. Maybe a sibling of Dad's that is two younger than he is. For Mom, it would have to be a siblng 5th in line after her. Or it could be the mate of the sibling one older than dad. Dog - The Dog has his/her own issues around sex. It can also come from her mom's dad, and/or her dad's mom. If they had issues over their sexuality they could have passed them down to the Dog....and the Dog being a Dog, took them more seriously than his/her other siblings. Boar - The Boar has a step father who exhibits the Dog's tendencies. It can also be people on their mate's job. Rat - The Rat has friends who are Dogs. The Rat is fearful of being betrayed or abandoned, and the Dog friends can be on their way if Rat people get too close when they don't want it. Rats and Dogs have to get to know each other, and not press the other's buttons. In more traditional Chinese Astrology you are told not to marry someone of the opposite sign, which in this case, is The Dragon. But when you overlap the Chinese chart over the western astrology chart, it becomes obvious, since the 7th house represents mate, and The Dragon is the seventh animal from the Dog, and the Dragon will be drawn to The Dog, and vice verse.....even if in Chinese terms, you shouldn't!!
So, Dog, don't write someone off who's a potential mate, just because they are a Dragon,
or a Leo (which is Dragon energy). More often you marry the animal energy that's opposite that at the time of your birth, which is more reflective of your personally; but the Dragon is part of the picture. A person may not be born in that year, but their, month, day or hour animal may be that energy or they can have a lot of planets in that area. After awhile you'll be able to recognize just who represents the energy and who doesn't. In the year ahead, you'll find that the area where your Dog energy is located, is where and whom you'll deal with this year. Sometimes I'll be going too fast on a short interpretation offered and will look at the Year, and say someone was born in the Year of the Dog, let's say, when they were born in early January. But, this isn't cut and dried. You aren't a Rooster on one day and a Dog the next. People born at that time are shapeshifting into the next sign. So by January the Rooster characteristics are giving way to the Dog; it would be like a Dog with a little look of the Rooster left. This applies to all birthdates at the beginning of the year before the next Chinese New Year takes place. copyright 2003-2004-2005-2006, Pamela Leigh Powers
