Matthew Perry

Western Astrology
It has been reported that Matthew Perry, "Chandler" on "Friends" is once again in rehab. The 32 year old star was born on August 19, 1969 in Williamstown, Massachusetts. He is the son of actor John Bennett Perry.

Matthew has a Leo sun, on the cusp of Virgo, so it isn't the 'larger than life" energy like the Leo sun normally might be. He was born when the Leo energy was waning and the Virgo energy was starting to build. He also has Mercury at 19 of Virgo and Pluto at 23 of Virgo, lending a more serious note to his personality, with a perfectionist streak.

Matthew has a Scorpio moon, which tends to a deep emotional nature. In looking up his birthdate on the IMDB, it said he has a missing part of the middle finger on the right hand. In the Chinese astrology interpretation you will see that the middle finger relates to the Circ-sex meridian in acupuncture, so we might speculate he was born from 7-9 pm during the time when that energy is strongest. Illnesses and accidents often point to the areas that dominant in a chart, and thus we can often rectify a chart to the time this way. If so, that would give him a Pisces rising, which would fit right in with acting. The Leo sun sign likes the limelight, while the Neptune/Pisces energy is more of the serious actor or the person, like Ron Howard, who will go beyond acting into directing and producing.

Matthew has Venus in Cancer, and the Moon and Neptune in Scorpio. If he has Pisces rising, then it would make him quite sensitive and emotional. The Virgo energy would give him a perfectionist energy which would be hard on himself, and the concentration in water signs could lead to addiction.

The major "Finger of God" aspect (Neptune sextile Pluto) points to the solar 9th house, where Saturn is, and in the Chinese interpretation we will see it's pointing at the Triple Warmer meridian on the Chinese overlay, which says that he might be prone to depression. With Saturn there, there could be issues around father energy and living up to a standard.

In the solar chart he has Pluto, Uranus and Jupiter in the second house of money, which certainly shows how he is a powerful star and money comes his way easily.

Looking at the transits for 2001, it really shows how depression can color everything. He really has good aspects this year. On january 25 when Jupiter went direct it trined Uranus, one of the best aspects one can have. Then Neptune trined Jupiter, which would be good for his career. Uranus inconjuncting Mercury can say that his mind is popping with new ideas and understanding. Saturn trining Pluto on January 25 as it went direct too; that's the best aspect these two can do, seeing they both are concerned with rules and regulations and domination. A trine says that he can use this year to set down solid roots for these two planets to work in his favor in the future.

Neptune squares his natal Moon around May (since we don't know the exact time) which has to do with his mother, his emotions and women. Neptune often blurs or melts down the energy. This could be one aspect that's causing him not to see the good stuff going on around him.

In May Saturn trines Uranus, which is another good aspect for conditional authority to approve of his uniqueness. On May 11, however, when Neptune goes retrograde, it squares Saturn, and that can be a time of heaviness, as both tend to lend themselves to depression. In fact, Neptune is squaring both his parent planets: Saturn represents father and the moon represents mother, and they were 180 degrees away from each other at birth, which would indicate in many cases that his parents weren't getting along at the time of his birth. Neptune may be coming in at this point to have him look at the ideal of parents and marriage that never happened.

When Saturn opposes Pluto in the sky for us all in August, Pluto is conjuncting Matthew's Mars as it goes direct on August 23rd. This will be a volatile time for him. It's 'mop up time' as Pluto has been over this place last year, but Pluto and Mars together can signify some strong dominating figure trying to manipulate him.

Mars also represents cars, men, surgery, knives, war, and Pluto rules "re" and "er": repair, remodel, recycle, renew, surgery, ...forgot the other one right now...so that Mars and Pluto aspecting each other is kind of classic in the movies of the car breaking down in a bad area. This is the time when we should make sure the car is repaired. It can also be a time when an ego driven doctor tries to force elective surgery.

Chinese Astrology
Matthew Perry was born in the Year of the Rooster. This is the archetype for the kidneys, and shows that at the core of his being, he has a lot of fear that he constantly deals with.

He was born in late Leo, so he has the Dragon energy waning as the Snake energy is building up. At the date he was born the archetypes are shapeshifting: the Dragon is becoming the Snake. The Snake represents the Virgo sun sign, so here again we have someone who takes things personally, and with all the water energy, its hard for him to be objective. He can read rejection into situations that are not personal.

We don't know the time he was born, but as I wrote in the other column, he has a "missing part of his middle finger"...what would that mean? The tip of the finger? The middle finger of both hands is where the Circ-Sex meridian ends. The animal is the Dog, and as we have seen, Dog people have issues around intimacy....and hasn't his alter ego "Chandler" been accused of being a commitment phobe? Many times actor's own foibles are incorporated into their characters. It also represents 'socializing' and being in public as well as one to one relationships, so he may have problems being in the public eye.

The Dog energy can be open and spontaneous like a little puppy dog....or it can bark and bite and lash out, because it is afraid of intimacy and connection. Sometimes Dog men can be womanizers who want sex but not relationship, and sometimes they can withdraw into religions that support them in the distaste of sex. The health Dog loves life, loves to be connected and in relationship, much like a loyal, loving dog who wants to be by your side.

As mentioned on the other side, the major "Finger of God" aspect, Neptune sextiling Pluto, points the 'finger' at the Triple Warmer area of his chart, where Saturn is close by. The meridians talk about 10 organs of the body and 2 processes: Circ-Sex, which is Circulation and the psyche of sex...and Triple Warmer, the three major causes of life: breathing, assimilation (eating) and elimination. The animal archetype is the Boar. The Boar tends to be morose and sad, looking at the dark things of life. In his early years, this point went over Saturn, and has been bouncing off of it ever since; just now starting to close in on Venus and shift the energy in the next few years. Someone who was conditional and critical in his life left a lasting impression, and causes the despair and futility. He needs to be around positive people who will help him see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Currently, Uranus and Neptune are in the Kidney/Rooster section of Matthew's chart. This can often bring subconscious phobias and fears to the surface. Uranus is famous for unearthing things and bringing them up to be exposed. Elements of his childhood may be coming up for him to look at and heal.

Matthew is a wonderful actor, and seemingly a great guy, who exudes a great presence on the screen. At his age, he should be reaping the rewards of the charisma and appeal that he projects. One wishes him well in his recovery.

4/25/02 - Matthew Perry on "Ali McBeal" - Wow! What happened to Matthew Perry in the last year....or since they wound up "Friends" for the year and he did "Ali"? A man has emerged...an adult man. Even tho he's in his early 30's, his roles in movies and on "Friends" was that of a post college guy, dressed in casual clothes, frequently playing basketball or foosball, being rather like the movies of the 20's and 30's where an affluent young man would enter asking "tennis anyone?" All of a sudden, Matthew has emerged into a real hunk! He has added some weight, and was really oozing sexuality on "Ali". Not that he wasn't before, but this is a new, mature sexuality that he wears well. One can see him moving into stronger roles in movies now that this new Matthew has emerged.

Pluto opposed Saturn in this last year, and it did its transformative, evolutionary, transcendent, 'heavy' energy on all of us. It was 'diamond making time'; taking the coal or carbon that we are unevolved, and through the heat and pressure, it molds us into diamonds. Matthew's natal Pluto is at 23 virgo, so while it isn't in orb to the opposition, still close enough to activate his Pluto square to its natal position in a few years. On his solar chart, this occurred from his 4th house of home and mother to the 10th house of career/father. If, as I speculated above, he was born between 7-9pm which would give him Pisces rising (or maybe late Aquarius rising, with mostly Pisces in the first house) which would be almost the opposite - the opposition would have occurred in the 3rd/9th axis right on the cusp of the 4th/10th.

It also looks like something might have been going on with his mom this year. Neptune squared the Moon on Jan 27, Neptune squared Saturn on Feb 10 (at the t square position between the Moon opp Saturn natally), Saturn inconjuncted the Moon on Feb 8th; lots of potent energy around his moon, which represents his emotional nature as well as his mom.

Whatever happened, Matthew Perry has emerged into a full fledged evolved man, who's really going to make a name for himself in the years ahead; eschewing the roles like "The Whole 9 Yards" where he was the younger lead, to more dramatic as well as comedic roles. He was soooo good on "Ali" that it has to lead to something new for him, as he moves into the second stage of his career.
